This photograph shows “Wadi Al Gharbiya” neighborhood in Nizwa, which is located on the north side of the historic Nizwa Castle. “Wadi” is the Arabic name for valley and Gharbiyah is the Arabic word for Western. The area name translates to “Western Valley” which lies opposite the Eastern Valley “Wadi Al Sharqiah”. The buildings are elevated to protect from weather elements and floods which commonly occur in Oman’s valleys during monsoon season. The high walls and towers served a defensive purpose during volatile times. “Wadi Al Gharbiyeh” – The western valley, is considered one of the fortified neighborhoods whose gates close after sunset and open with sunrise during “Fajr” prayers.
