Amidst a background of traditional clay houses with palm trees and other fruits planted within the walls, an Omani woman is washing the dishes near the stream outlet leading to her house. This network of streams, called “Aflaj” plural, were the hallmarks of life in the arid Northern Oman for thousands of years and have made life possible by capitalizing on ground water systems that could be kilometers away.
