After the renaissance in 1970, the diesel generator was introduced to the market which brought convenience to many homes. The generator powered the pump that pumped the running water out of a nearby well into the pipe seen in the photograph. These wells were called “Tawi” after the stone cladding structure that was its hallmark. In this photograph we see a child and two teenage girls washing the dishes and doing laundry near their home under a palm tree. The teenager in the front is folding a mat where the clean items will be placed once they are ready to dry. Notice the humble flooring made of clay and mud and the barrels of gasoline in the background.
